At Home in a World We Don't Yet Inhabit presents new archival photographic prints from Nansi T. Lent's series Photographic Palimpsests. Lent begins with photographs of the world around her and of her own paintings and drawings, then layers, fragments, and recombines them digitally until the original sources can no longer be pulled apart. Places merge with paintings, marks become landscape, and recognizable fragments emerge and slip away again. Some prints open onto imagined terrain; others read as things you might encounter there, like messages from another world.
The series also marks a return to Lent's earliest photographic work, in which she intentionally overexposed slides, layered several together, and made internegatives to produce C-prints, creating images that could never have existed in front of a camera. The new prints carry that layering into digital form, and they draw on the painting practice she has developed over the past decade, which explores language, the unconscious, and the urge to write.
