Artist Talk: Linda Lauro-Lazin “On letting go and rising out of the ashes”

  • BAU Gallery 506 Main Street Beacon, NY, 12508 United States (map)

Fire & Ash: What Arises and What Remains? Fire is both an ending and a beginning—a force of destruction and purification, capable of consuming what once was while creating the conditions for something new to emerge. Lauro-Lazin’s newest work explores fire as an agent of change, a transformative presence that exists at the intersection of loss, renewal, and rebirth. It is a force that strips away, exposes, and alters, leaving behind the remnants of what was and the possibility of what might be. Destruction is not always an ending. Ash is a residue of the past and a foundation for what follows.

Working across digital media, video, monoprint, photography, and an archive of scorched personal artifacts, Lauro-Lazin investigates the tension between destruction and creation, absence and presence, fragility and resilience. Each medium offers a different approach to the instability of transformation: the imprint of something that can never be repeated, the fleeting movement of an image, the layering and erasure of a surface. These processes echo the nature of fire itself—unpredictable, consuming, generative, andimpossible to fully control.

About the artist: Linda Lauro-Lazin is a visual artist, an educator, and a technologist, developing a vernacular of digital mark-making and abstraction that conflates analog and digital painting. She is the Assistant Chair of the Department of Digital Arts in the School of Art at Pratt Institute. Lauro-Lazin is a Fulbright Scholar and the recipient of the Wave Hill Winter Workspace Residency, and the Fondation Karolyi Residency, with works exhibited at BAU Gallery, the Knockdown Center, Dorsky Museum among many others. She received an MFA from Pratt Institute and an MA from New York Institute of Technology.
