Karen Allen
“My paintings use form, color and texture to tell visual stories I uncover intuitively as I work. I use unexpected materials, the ‘flotsam and jetsam’ of my everyday life and studio practice. The 3-dimensional facets of repurposed boxes are an important way I explore and integrate appearing narratives with formal process. The lyricism of the landscape in the Hudson Valley is one of my major motifs as are the figure-like forms that often emerge and combine with it. I look to find the fine line of balance between abstraction and recognizable imagery, hoping in this way to increase the engagement of the viewer. I earned a BFA on scholarship in painting from Syracuse University in the late ’70’s and have been practicing art ever since.”
